Internships

If you have a specific project that a student/graduate could assist with, or you need an extra pair of hands over the holidays, taking on an intern could be the answer.  Students and graduates often look for short-term opportunities to develop their skills and enhance their employability prospects, and this brings talent and fresh perspectives to your business.

The University is delighted to be one of approximately 80 UK Santander Universities.  Each summer, Santander funds us to facilitate an internship scheme which places our grads into local SMEs. Internships are a great way to scout future talent with many businesses being so impressed with their intern that they take them on permanently afterwards.

Student Projects

Our students often undertake specific assignments or challenges within the context of their degree, often in place of a dissertation, which is critical to the completion of their studies. We invite businesses to put forward small projects, or briefs, which we can build into relevant modules or offer as research opportunities for our students.

Not only does this give our students’ the ability to build and apply their academic understanding, gain experience, and increase their career prospects, it gives your business the chance to gain specialist knowledge into a project of your choice. Also, we have recently implemented our new Innovation Creative Exchange Plus (ICE+) programme, which offers short internships for students to work on industry-leading projects.

Graduate Recruitment

Our graduates are in high demand and we have an impressive record for graduate employment –95% of our undergraduate students and 97% of our postgraduate students go on to work and/or further study within fifteen months of graduating (HESA Graduate Outcomes 2021/22, UK domiciled, other activities excluded).

Graduates from the University bring with them the latest knowledge, skills and a new perspective to progress your business.  The University places a great deal of importance on industry experience and therefore 100% of our undergraduate students have the opportunity to undertake professional work experience during their studies (this applies to undergraduate courses of more than 12 months duration).  So our graduates are ready to add immediate value.

Part-Time Paid and Voluntary Roles

Our students often look to supplement their incomes with part-time and weekend roles, which they work around their course commitments.  Their flexibility and valuable work can support spikes in demand during busy periods and the daily demands of businesses.  The University recommends that students work no more than 15 hours per week in term-time with more flexibility during the regular University holidays.

Many of our students have a strong social conscience and are willing to give up their spare time to volunteer for causes which resonate with them. Popular causes for our students currently are those that help make our community a greener and more sustainable place to live in, but they often volunteer for other worthy causes too.
