Child Protection
The Centre for Applied Childhood Studies (CACS) has established a research partnership which aims to extend our work on the prevention of child sexual abuse (CSA). The partnership is with ‘Stop It Now!’, an organisation with its headquarters in Northampton, Massachusetts, USA. Stop It Now! prevents the sexual abuse of children by enabling adults, families and communities to take action to protect children before they are harmed. Utilising the public health approach to prevention and education, the organisation provides resources, information, training and community mobilisation strategies to bring about change (http://www.stopitnow.org).
Based on a shared value position about the locus of responsibility for child sexual abuse and a commitment to empowerment-based public health approaches to prevention, our work with the organisation has already produced tangible results. Early outputs include a sharing of the research methods from the CACS UNICEF-commissioned study on CSA (www.unicef.org/barbados) and the widespread dissemination of the research through a three-part webcast hosted by Stop It Now! The 50-minute presentations covered key findings from the study about culturally contexted perceptions, patriarchy and gender inequality, and survivors’ voices. Recordings and slides of the webcast can be found on the Stop It Now! website (http://www.stopitnow.org/caribbean_research_webcast_archive)
