Child and family migration

Lead: Dr Kate Smith (K.Smith@hud.ac.uk)

The focus of this research theme is to increase understandings of the diversity of historical and contemporary contexts of migration and asylum, both in theoretical and practical terms, with a particular focus on how these are lived by children, young people, women and families across local, regional, national and international spaces. Seeking to develop progressive thinking on human migration and mobilities, specific research interests include: asylum and refugee studies; narratives of transnational migration, borders and the figure of the ‘migrant’; gender and the feminisation of migration; theories and practices of resistance; ‘vulnerabilities’ and ‘the (un)deserving’; dynamics of socio-cultural inclusion, exclusion and expulsion; identity and belonging; detention, asylum housing and access to public services; contesting the inequalities and injustices that coincide with immigration policies and practices.
