Children and parents living apart

Lead: Ben Raikes (B.Raikes@hud.ac.uk)

This research theme builds on the success of the international EU funded COPING project involving 6 countries, and concerned with the needs of children of imprisoned parents. This work has led to the founding of the International Coalition for Children with Incarcerated Parents (INCCIP) which was launched at the International Prisoners Family conference in Dallas in 2015. Centre members Adele Jones and Ben Raikes were subsequently invited to present at the INCCIP ‘Justice and Children of Prisoners’ conference in New Zealand, in March 2017, the largest international conference on this subject ever to be held. Specific research interests in this theme currently include: Imprisoned Mothers and how they maintain contact with their children, overnight stay facilities in prisons, grand-parent carers for children with imprisoned parents, mental health and well-being of children and parents living apart.
