Welcome to the Centre for Multisensory and Immersive Computing (CMIC)
The Centre for Multisensory and Immersive Computing (CMIC) is a multidisciplinary research centre within the Department of Computer Science at the University of Huddersfield, bringing together expertise in human–computer interaction (HCI), extended reality (XR), immersive audio, visual computing, game technologies, haptics, and user experience research. We investigate how humans perceive, interact with and respond to digital, physical and intelligent systems through immersive and multisensory computing. Our research integrates audio, visual, haptic and behavioural computing to develop technologies and experiences that are perceptually meaningful, human-centred and relevant to real-world needs.
Our vision is to integrate audio, visual, haptic and behavioural computing within a human-centred framework. By combining technical innovation with rigorous research into perception, cognition, behaviour and user experience, we seek to develop immersive technologies that are effective, accessible and aligned with human needs.
CMIC provides a focal point for collaborative research across Computer Science and related disciplines including Engineering, Human and Health Sciences, Music, Media, Psychology and Architecture. Through this multidisciplinary approach, CMIC aims to become an internationally leading hub for research in immersive computing, XR, HCI and multisensory user experience.

Research Areas
CMIC’s research focuses on the design, development and evaluation of immersive and multisensory technologies and experiences. Our work addresses the growing need for human-centred approaches to extended reality, spatial computing and interactive digital systems.
Centre for Audio and Psychoacoustic Engineering
Specialises in the study of auditory perception and its practical applications in audio engineering and music technology.
Centre for Visual and Immersive Computing
Focuses on regional and international dimensions of knowledge/technology innovation, application and practice development, academic networking, and social service innovation.
