Introduction

Progress in many processes is stimulated by the innovation in Materials. Operational efficiency requires from materials to survive nowadays in conditions which only can be described as extreme. The development of new and or improved products or processes inevitably relies on innovation in materials.

Radical improvements in the performance and reliability of materials in extreme operational environments give companies the competitive edge in many high-value markets. The need for, and application of, those materials involve most sectors, including transport, the built environment, energy, manufacturing, electronics and health.

Contemporary engineering products ought to be designed to survive and provide long-term high performance under a broad spectrum of adverse conditions ranging from repetitive mechanical loading to nuclear irradiation and from high temperatures to living tissue environments. Surface coatings offer the possibility to deliver materials which can withstand such an extreme environments at market sustainable costs. Coatings are already widely used in industry and represent a market worth in excess of £10 billion per annum. However, there are areas where current materials and coatings fall short of new demands in terms of broadly defined durability; some of these are important for medical applications, for example, where resistance to bacteria and general biocompatibility and endurance are of concern.

It is timely therefore to overview policies, funding opportunities and actual innovation in materials science and technology. This forum aims to bring innovation on to the doorstep of the local business community and to look at the requirements and problems that need to be resolved to widen the scope of materials for improved products in the future.

The event will be a unique opportunity for policy maker, industry and academia to share knowledge and develop collaborations. The event will act as a forum for innovation and collaboration, an opportunity to network, as well as acquire new insight and expert advice.

Forum format

The Forum will run over two and a half days and will consist of plenary talks, invited and oral presentations, poster sessions and commercial organisation exhibition. The first day will concentrate on policies and funding for innovation in materials. Technology based talks, technical exhibition and poster sessions will form the day two. Sessions and poster session focused on fundamental understanding of materials and coating for extreme environments will form the agenda for the day three.

The meeting will include discussions on:

• Industry requirements for extreme environment materials,
• Key Challenges facing the materials suppliers and OEMs,
• Potential collaborations to meet those challenges.

Delegates will include policy makers, industry leaders, development managers, research directors, research funding bodies, academic researchers, senior scientists and engineers in the materials and coatings field.

The forum will be held on 22-24th November 2017 and the venue will be the University of Huddersfield and 3M Buckley Innovation Centre.
