During the last century many performing artists started a search for new approaches to artistic work, moving closer to the processes involved in work on oneself; often detaching from the representational and mimetic models and expanding their pedagogical actions beyond the boundaries between art/life and art/culture. In this context the body assumes a central position, with many artists and researchers getting closer to Eastern traditions – especially to practices which question the separation between body and mind and which serve as catalysts for internal processes – such as yoga, tai’chi and meditation. This talk will be focused on the growth of interest in the Buddhist tradition and notably on meditative practices. As a teacher in the performing arts field my interest is in discussing how mindfulness can offer new approaches to the actor’s training; in particular I will address concepts of Theatre Pedagogy, Psychophysical Training and Cultivation. The talk will be preceded by the performance “Yatra” at 5.00pm, a meditative journey from the University entrance towards Milton Building.
