Dr James Reid

James Reid (Jim) is Director of HudCRES and he researches under the ‘Education’s contribution to family and social cohesion’ theme, specifically on Family Capabilities and communities. He is particularly interested in working alongside vulnerable people and groups and in approaches that integrate participants throughout the research process.

He is a Leverhulme International Research Fellow, working with colleagues at the University of the Western Cape, Cape Town to define and develop the concept of Family Capabilities through a South African lens. This work involves communities from Mitchell’s Plain in Cape Town and Vredenburg in the Saldanha Bay Municipality, the Western Cape to co-design sustainable interventions that strengthen family capabilities and family wellbeing based on the lived experience of those who have been affected by familial, social, and/or political trauma.

As a visiting research fellow at the University of the Western Cape he is also a research leader on: South Africa National Research Foundation, Competitive Programme for Rated Researchers: ‘In the eye of the storm: Co-designing and developing an intervention by practitioners and families to enhance the well-being of families post Covid-19 pandemic’ Professor N. Roman (PI).

Past research projects:

AHRC: ‘Life-Saving Lullabies: Reducing adolescent maternal and neonatal deaths in Zambia’, AHRC (2020), St John Zambia. (Co-I).

This award winning project utilised human centre design to develop a sustainable approach to reducing maternal and infant mortality in Zambia. A series of films developed by the project are available here.

University of Huddersfield: ‘Mothers, Covid-19 and Work at Home: Their account in words and portraits’. This project, funded by the University of Huddersfield during the Covid-19 pandemic utilised remote photographic portraiture (Fran Monks) to highlights the experiences of 12 mothers during lockdown in May and June 2020. The portraits were the focus of an exhibition at the Thackray Museum of Medicine.

Other research interests:

Jim has also been undertaking research into a (more) ethical school inspection process and has developed a short animation with Kilogramme Animation Studios.
