Professor Iwnicki is the academic Co-Chair of Rail Research UK-Association and Deputy Chairman of the Railway Division of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Editor in Chief of Part F of the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (the Journal of Rail and Rapid Transit) and Editor (responsible for railway matters) of the journal Vehicle System Dynamics. IMechE Part F is regarded as a key journal for disseminating the results of railway research to the industry. 

Simon Iwnicki was the editor and Paul Allen and Julian Stow were contributors to the ‘Handbook of Railway Vehicle Dynamics’ published in 2006 and now established as a key text for researchers in Universities and industry in this field.

Paul Allen appeared the BBC’s ‘Richard Hammond’s Engineering Connections’ in 2011 to explain how the forces between the wheel and the rail influence the safe running of high speed trains.

Members of the IRR contribute to Industry standards through membership of various committees and working groups including:

  • Vehicle Track System Interface Committee (V/T SIC) Technical Advisory Group (TAG)
  • BSI Gauging Standards Committee
  • CEN European Working Group on gauging
  • Technical Strategy Leadership Group (TSLG)

The IRR is a member of the Rail Research UK - Association (RRUK-A) which is funded by the Rail Safety and Standard Board Ltd (RSSB) and Network Rail, and includes members from a large number of UK universities.
