Alba Emoting Method Weekend – April 2014

Thu, 06 Feb 2014 10:39:00 GMT

“Alba Emoting Method” will be a 2-day challenge for those who want to explore this psychophysical tool.

It takes place in Milton Building, Studio 1, on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 April and is a free event.

This workshop will briefly introduce you to each of the emotional effector patterns.

The Alba Emoting Method is a safe, non-psychoanalytic approach to the identification, expression, and regulation of emotion. This psychophysical tool allows the actor to explore and experience the physiological changes that occur during emotion. By learning to control the breathing, facial expression and postural attitude for each emotional pattern, the actor can experience and manipulate each emotion at will.

The technique is derived from extensive scientific research carried out by neuroscientist Susana Bloch and is a safe, purely physical alternative to emotion memory and other psychological techniques for releasing, maintaining, and controlling emotional states on stage.

Dr Jessica Beck is a theatre director and somatic practitioner based in London. She is currently teaching Directing at Canterbury Christ Church University and Royal Holloway College, having previously been Education and Projects Director for Theatre503 from 2006 – 2010. She is a recipient of The New York International Fringe Festival Excellence Award for Outstanding Direction (2007).

Jessica has a PhD in Performance Practice entitled “Directing Emotion: A Practice-based Investigation into the Challenge of Emotion in Western Performance.” Her doctoral research led her to discover Alba Emoting and the Feldenkrais Method. Jessica is an Alba Emoting Instructor CL5 and a Feldenkrais teacher of Awareness Through Movement.

Dr Eric Hetzler is a Senior Lecturer at the University, where he teaches acting and directing. His primary area of research is empirical examinations of how actors describe the experience of performance with an emphasis on emotion. This work has led him to Alba Emoting and its use in actor training. He is currently a certified level 2 Alba practitioner.

The participants will be learning the 6 basic effector patterns over the 2 days, along with some additional exercises. As this is studio based training, participants are asked to wear comfortable clothing as they might for any movement or actor training.

You're invited to make a contribution towards costs for refreshments (tea and coffee) which will be provided.  You should bring a packed lunch or plan to visit one of the nearby shops and cafes (though many will be closed on Sunday).
