What we can offer teachers...

Taster days

We run regular bespoke linguistics taster days catering for a level students. Taster days give students the chance to experience what it is like to study linguistics at university through attending lectures and workshops.

Become a bridge fellow

Bridge Fellows bridge the gap between universities and schools. We are looking for committed teachers in secondary schools, sixth form and FE colleges to help us build on our strengthening connections with these post-16 institutions. We invite applications for a number of two-year Bridge Fellowships in linguistics.

Become an Affiliate

Teachers who have a relationship with our department, but are not paid or taught by the University, can apply for Affiliate Status. Affiliates can get a campus card, access to IT resources, our library and other services. You can apply to be an Affiliate here.

Continuing professional development events

We host an Annual Symposium for teachers of English Language at A Level. The day includes practical workshops and talks by specialists in English Language and Linguistics. This free one-day event aims to:

  • foster closer connections between A Level and University-level English Language and linguistics;
  • introduce teachers to new theories and methodologies for studying English Language;
  • open up discussion as to how current developments in language and linguistics might be implemented in the A Level English classroom.
