Vision

The overall vision of the Secure Societies Institute is to be an innovative, internationally renowned institute dedicated to providing applied, practical evidence-based solutions to global security challenges.

Mission

The mission of the Secure Societies Institute is to actively develop high quality multi-disciplinary research that provides solutions to the challenge of creating and sustaining a secure society.

We aim to achieve this by:

  • Bringing together research active staff and students from across seven different Schools with a common interest in crime and security.
  • Facilitating the exchange of ideas, skills, methodologies, equipment, data and networks between research active staff and students with an interest in crime and security.
  • Provide a platform for researchers, students, practitioners and policy makers to develop innovative solutions to global security challenges.

Goals

  • To carry out internationally outstanding, original, rigorous, innovative research that crosses the boundaries between disciplines.
  • To create a team of research active staff with a common interest in the prevention, investigation and mitigation of crime and security threats, to provide support for existing staff and to build capacity in areas of strategic research importance.  
  • To produce high quality, multi-disciplinary publications.
  • To improve the standard of publications produced by staff and to broaden the scope of publication options.
  • To secure high profile research grants.
  • To increase international links with world class universities. 
  • To attract high calibre research students.
  • To identify the needs of end users and to develop innovative, multi-disciplinary solutions to those needs.
  • To produce research that impacts on policy and practice.
  • To disseminate research beyond academia.
  • To facilitate access to data, equipment and contacts across disciplines for all members.
