Biography

Frédéric Dufeu is Research Fellow in Music and Music Technology at the University of Huddersfield. He joined the Centre for Research in New Music (CeReNeM) at Huddersfield in August 2012, working as Research Assistant on the AHRC-funded TaCEM project (Technology and Creativity in Electroacoustic Music, 2012-2015) led by Michael Clarke (University of Huddersfield) and Peter Manning (Durham University). He took up his current position as Research Fellow in July 2015, and is pursuing research on and development of innovative software tools for musical creation, sound experimentation, and interactive analysis.

He previously worked as Teaching Assistant in Computer Music and Electroacoustic Music Studio Manager at Université Rennes 2 (France), where he completed a Master’s degree in Arts and Digital Technologies supervised by Bruno Bossis (2007) and a PhD in Music supervised by Antoine Bonnet (2010). He has been qualified to apply for lecturer positions by the French National Council of Universities (CNU), in sections 18 (Arts, 2011) and 22 (History and Civilisations, 2015).

He is a member of the International Computer Music Association (ICMA), of the French Society for Music Analysis (SFAM) and of the French Association for Computer Music (AFIM).

Research and Scholarship

Frédéric Dufeu's main research areas are:

- the analysis and history of electroacoustic music;

- the contemporary developments of digital instruments for musical creation and their impacts on creative processes;

- the effectiveness of interactivity and visualisation in experiencing sound processings and musical structures.

Within the TaCEM project at Huddersfield he has been developing, jointly with Michael Clarke and Peter Manning, software dedicated to Interactive Aural Analysis and to the investigation of a series of eight case studies from the electroacoustic repertoire. He is currently developing further software tools involving flexible modular approaches to digital signal processing, three-dimensional spatialisation of sound, and the analysis of creative programs and programming methods. His primary creative computing environments are Max and SuperCollider.

He also has research background and interest in relationships between experimental music and visual arts, and in the use of electronic and digital tools in free improvisation.
