Following a one-year funded project investigating the development of pragmatic competence of Chinese students studying in the UK, Yun (Amy) HE embarked on her doctoral research under the supervision of Dr Chris Christie at Loughborough University and obtained her PhD on linguistic politeness in 2012. Amy is currently working with Professor Dániel Z. Kádár in the Centre for Intercultural Politeness Research. She is involved in research focusing on (im)politeness, historical and contemporary pragmatics, and rituality, among others.

In the past she was awarded national and international research grants by funders including the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the Great Britain-China Educational Trust. Being a member of the LPRG and IPrA, Amy not only regularly gives presentations at international conferences organised by these scientific organisations but also reviews manuscripts for Journal of Pragmatics and Journal of Politeness Research under their management. Amy is an active researcher and has published in areas such as politeness, sociolinguistics, intercultural communication, translation and identity.

Amy is a member of the Organising Committee of the 1st Postgraduate Conference on Linguistic Politeness, which is scheduled to take place at the University of Huddersfield on Friday 8th March 2013.

Research and Scholarship

Amy’s recent interests are mainly in (im)politeness and face, pragmatics, and identity, but her research cuts across a wider range of (sub)disciplines such as discourse analysis, intercultural communication, sociolinguistics, translation studies and TEFL. Her latest publications appear in peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Politeness Research. Her earlier works, including both journal articles and book chapters were mostly published when she was a lecturer at several universities in China.

Amy has to date completed five research projects funded by national and international grants, varying in length from one to three years. They include, in chronological order, Sasakawa Postgraduate Scholarship (Sasakawa Foundation), Young Staff Research Funding (Yunnan Normal University), Overseas Scholarship (China Scholarship Council), the Overseas Research Studentship Award (ORS) (Higher Education Funding Council for England), the Research Studentship (Loughborough University), and the Chinese Student Award (the Great Britain-China Educational Trust). All of her following research outputs have in a certain way benefited from these generous scholarships.
