Julio d’Escriván is Senior Lecturer in music for the moving image within the Music Technology course since August of 2012. He is also director of the Sound-Music-Image Research Centre within the School of Music. Previously Julio was a reader in Creative Music Technology and University Learning and Teaching Fellow at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge between 2005 and 2012.
Since 1992 Julio has worked extensively in music for commercials, TV branding and both feature and documentary film in the Americas. Julio is active as a composer, laptop performer, video artist and improviser. His recent work includes ensemble work with Iñigo Ibaibarriaga (FUSIL), conducting the Bilbao Soundpainting Ensemble (in Spain) and as video artist in an electronic music duo with Monty Adkins.
Julio’s recent written work includes his book‘Music Technology’ (Cambridge Introductions to Music, 2012) by Cambridge University Press. He is also coeditor of the Cambridge Companion to Electronic Music (2007) and co-author of the Chapter on Composing with SuperCollider for The SuperCollider Book published by MIT Press (2011).
As a graduate student at City University London in the 1980s, he was supervised for his Electroacoustic Composition PhD (1991) by Simon Emmerson and occasionally Robert Saxton in acoustic composition. He's also a guitarist and obtained his Licentiate of the Guildhall School of Music (LGSM) in 1984. For his undergraduate music education he went to the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology, now Anglia Ruskin University. He also studied at Cambridge University (Trinity Hall) for a year with Robin Holloway. Between 1989 and 1991 he was a consultant for Yamaha R&D, London working in sampling and synthesiser voicing. In 1987 he obtained the 1st Prize of the “Catégorie Mixte” at the 15th International Electroacousic Music of Bourges, France, for his piece “Sin Ti Por El Alma Adentro”, for flute and tape. In 1989 he obtained the 2nd Prize “ex-aequo”of the Electronic Music Category at the 17th International Electroacousic Music festival of Bourges, France, for his piece “Salto Mortal” for Tape. He has received prizes in his native Venezuela, for his concert music, and his film and electronica work. His electroacoustic music has been performed and broadcast internationally.
In recent years he won, with his co-author Nick Collins the Nicolas Bessaraboff Prize award of the American Musical Instrument Society for The Cambridge Companion to Electronic Music, 2009 (USA). In South America, he won the Best Music For Film, at the Festival de Cine Venezolano de Mérida, 2008 (for El Tinte de La Fama). In music for commercials he won the Best Original Music, Bronze Medal, Venezuelan Advertising Awards (ANDA 2001-2002). He has also produced popular electronic music and won Best New Experimental Album for Inventos Barbaros, at the annual Premios Caracas Pop&Rock in 1999.

Julio was awarded the Anglia Ruskin Learning and teaching Fellowship in 2010 and also received the Anglia Ruskin University Vice Chancellor’s award in 2009.

Julio teaches in Music and the Moving Image, Sound Design, Computer Composition and ‘Grooves, glitches and crackles’ (an introductory musicology of electronic and pop music) Leads the Laptop Ensemble as part of the pop performance module. Julio also supervises independent projects for final year students.
