Dr Eshani Beddewela is a Senior Lecturer in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). She received her PhD in CSR and International Business from Bradford University School of Management on implementing CSR within multinational enterprises in Sri Lanka.

Eshani joined the University of Huddersfield Business School in 2013, having previously worked at the University of Gloucestershire, Bradford University School of Management and University of Colombo (Sri Lanka). Prior to the commencement of her academic career, she worked as a senior human resources executive in the public sector in Sri Lanka.

Eshani is a past Commonwealth Scholar and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

She has published in journals such as the Journal of Business Ethics and Accounting Forum, and contributed to edited collections.


Research and Scholarship

Eshani’s research interests are; corporate social responsibility in the multinational corporation, political dimensions of CSR and micro-foundations of CSR.

Eshani is presently involved in the following research projects related to her main research interests:

  • Firm-level antecedents of CSR
  • Governance of CSR in controversial sectors
  • Institutional duality and transfer of CSR in Multinational Corporations
  • Integrative perspectives of CSR and corporate political activity at the firm-level

Eshani currently acts as an external examiner for the University of Cumbria’s MBA in Leadership and Sustainability. She has also acted as an external examiner for doctoral theses at the University of New Castle, Australia.

Research Degree Supervision

Eshani would be interested in supervising PhDs focusing on the following areas:

  • CSR at the firm-level, with a focus on integrative perspectives of political activity
  • CSR in multinational corporations with a focus on transfer of CSR and CSR governance.
  • Micro foundations of CSR with a focus on motives and constructs of ‘responsibility’.

She is currently supervising the following doctoral research projects:-

  • Ali Gerged - Corporate Environmental Disclosure in the MENA Region: Institutional Perspectives (co-supervisor, Prof Chris Cowton)
  • Charlotte Warin - An Investigation into the Institutionalization of Responsible Management Education into UK Business Schools (co-supervisor, Prof. John Anchor)
  • Rabake Kinba Hermelline M. Nana - The political implications of Corporate Social Responsibility: A study of Mining MNCs in West Africa (Co-Supervisor, Dr Olu Aluko)

Enterprise Activities

Eshani is the Business School representative for the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education (UNPRME), which aims to be a global driver for responsible management education, research and leadership.

Administrative Responsibilities

Eshani is the Year One tutor for the BA Business Studies programme.

Teaching and Professional Activities

Eshani’s teaching experience includes a number of subjects such as Business Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility, International Business Strategy and International Business in Emerging Economies; taught at the University of Bradford, University of Gloucestershire and University of Colombo (Sri Lanka).

She presently contributes to Business Responsibility and Sustainability (Module Leader - Undergraduate) and Corporate Responsibility and Governance (Module Tutor – Post Graduate).
