Position: Senior Lecturer, Department of Logistics, Operations, Hospitality and Marketing
Qualifications: BSc, MSc

Janna joined the Events Management lecturing team in April 2011, and currently teach modules in the 1st and 2nd years.

Up until 2011 Janna worked at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, prior to that she has worked in various hotels and in the key cities and convention towns in Yorkshire. Janna has had the opportunity to work with some amazing people to deliver exceptional event experiences within the corporate sector, such as exhibitions (Eurogamer), conferences (with Allan Sugar & Gordon Brown), car launches (for Hyundai, Kia and Ford) and team building events. She has, however, also organised her fair share of weddings and Christmas parties and has plenty of funny and not too funny experiences to share.

Research and Scholarship

Janna’s main professional interests lie in Corporate Events and the Consumer Experience. She is currently completing her PhD on Generation Y and their engagement in association and business conferences.

To encourage the ethos on the course of ‘50% Practical and 50% Academic’, Janna tries to include a number of industry focused activities in the modules she teaches and the extracurricular activity that she conducts.

For Event Operations Management, Janna takes the students on a 4 day field trip to Scotland, where they visit a variety of different venues, meeting industry professionals and researching the thriving event industries in Edinburgh and Glasgow. This forms part of the students assessment and offers them a real insight into the industry they have selected.

Janna also conducts a series of sales training exercises with the first years. Sales is a huge part of the events industry and often one of the most daunting. This culminates in visiting a local venue to conduct showarounds with industry professionals.

The second year students have the opportunity to attend and exhibit at a local industry event. This is a very unique experience whereby the students are exhibiting as future employees to the industry in order to secure placement opportunities.

Enterprise Activities

Janna, along with colleague Mandy White are mentoring an events enterprise set up and run by 4 placement students. This is an events management and volunteering agency, aptly named EM-VA. They currently work with clients within the University and also external corporate and community clients.

Administrative Responsibilities

Janna is admissions tutor and also coordinates a bulging recruitment programme. As a lecturing team they visit schools and colleges to deliver events related workshops and talks, this allows students to understand more about the industry they may choose as a future career.

The team also runs a number of events (EVENTerprise Challenge & Plan your Prom) on campus for 6th form students to experience what it is like to be an event manager.

Teaching and Professional Activities

Janna teaches modules which are focused around her industry experience such as MICE events, the corporate sector (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions). She is also module leader for Event Industry Studies (1st year) and Fundraising & Sponsorship (2nd year).
