Richard joined the university in 2013 having worked in online, radio, TV and print journalism. He was variously a journalist, producer and broadcaster for Sky News, BBC Radio 5 live and Xfm among others, and established the Saddleworth News hyperlocal journalism site. He previously taught social media and online journalism skills at the University of Leeds. Richard has an MA in International Politics from the University of Manchester, and a BA in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Leeds.
Richard was a fellow at the 2017 Scripps Howard Journalism Entrepreneurship Institute, held at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, part of Arizona State University.
Richard is the leader of the first year module Journalism Technologies and the third year module Journalism Innovation.
Richard is studying for a PhD part-time at Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, under the supervision of Prof Stuart Allan and Prof Richard Sambrook. The title is ‘Late Night Final: The sustainability of court reporting in the UK media’. It examines the history of media law and court reporting in the UK and the ability of traditional media companies to effectively report the courts in an era of declining circulations and staffing levels at many local newspapers, as well as how that coverage might be provided in the future. It is due for completion in 2019.
