Graeme is a Senior Research Fellow in the Electron Microscopy and Materials Analysis (EMMA) Research Group within the School of Computing and Engineering. He received his PhD in physics from the University of Salford in 2012, investigating the effect of ion irradiation on silicon and iron.

Graeme is currently involved in the installation, testing and running of the new £3.5M EPSRC funded MIAMI-2 facility at the University of Huddersfield. Which combines high and low energy ion accelerators with a Hitachi H9500 transmission electron microscope, in order to investigate the effects of ion irradiation in real time at the nanoscale.

Research and Scholarship

Areas of interest include:

  • Radiation damage of materials, in particular relating to the current and next generation of nuclear reactors.
  • Modification of solids using ion irradiation.
  • Electron microscopy
  • The formation of ordered arrays of nano-sized gas bubbles (bubble lattices) within metals during irradiation.
