Sergio graduated from University of Porto in 2005 in Civil Engineering with an honours degree for finishing in the first 10%. After he did a Masters, in the same university, entitled Dynamic analysis with vehicle-structure interaction in high speed lines, and he is currently finishing his PhD entitled Dynamics of vehicle–structure systems in railway lines.
His main area of expertise is wheel-rail contact methods and he has developed a novel and efficient method for analysing the nonlinear vehicle-structure interaction. Sergio has a strong background in software development and has experience in working with several programming languages.
Sergio contributed to industry led projects for the design of railway viaducts in high-speed lines and derailment investigation.
Sergio's main research activities are in the field of wheel-rail contact, vehicle and structure modelling, dynamics of structures and software development. He has been working in these areas for over 8 years, during which time he developed a novel wheel-rail contact method for analysing the nonlinear vehicle-structure interaction. He implemented this method in the general purpose finite element computer program FEMIX, which is developed in ANSI-C, and is one of the main developers of a computer program developed in MATLAB that is used to analyse the nonlinear vehicle-structure interaction, taking into account the wheel and rail geometry.
