Biography

Position: Professor of Entrepreneurship and Director of Research, Department of Management

Gerard was appointed as Professor of Rural Entrepreneurship at Huddersfield Business School in November 2014. Prior to that he was Professor of Entrepreneurship at Sheffield Hallam and Nottingham Trent Universities and Reader in Rural Entrepreneurship at the University of Lincoln. Gerard started his working life as an apprentice Plater in the now non-existent Shipbuilding industry on the River Tees, before attending Teesside Polytechnic as a mature Student. Gerard is the Editor of The International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation http://ijei.sagepub.com/ published by SAGE, which he launched in 2000. He sits on numerous Editorial Boards in the area of Entrepreneurship.

He developed an interest in Entrepreneurship in the Rural after carrying out research and consultancy work with small rural businesses and farmers. He has over 100 refereed publications and has published extensively in the area of Entrepreneurship.

His most recent interests are illegal and criminal entrepreneurship.

Esteem

Gerard is the Editor of The International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation http://ijei.sagepub.com/ which he launched in 1990. Gerard has given given key note speeches at conferences in US, Morocco, Mexico, Ireland, Germany and Australia and acted as a consultant on farm diversification issues. He is currently, the Track Chair for Rural Entrepreneurship. Track of ISBE. Gerard has sat on numerous validation panels at external universities and is currently an external examiner at Ulster Business School. He was a subject assessor for the QAA.

Research Degree Supervision

I am currently supervising 3 PhD students and has supervised to completion 5. I  have examined 16 students. I am particularly interested in enquiries from potential students who are interested in Rural entrepreneurship, Rural sustainability, Farm Diversification and Illegal entrepreurship.

Enterprise Activities

Gerard has worked with local authorites on rural and village sustainability, engaged in consultancy with rural businesses in particular farm enterprises.

Teaching and Professional Activities

I teach Entrepreneurship, Research Methods, Strategy and New Venture Creation. I have taught in Oman, Germany, Zambia, Mexico, France and Spain, Austria. As an editor, I facilitate numerous workshops on ‘Getting published’.
