Biography

Miguel Figueres joined the University of Huddersfield as Research Assistant in 2014. He started his research at Institute of Railway Research (IRR) focused on big data analytics techniques for extracting safety knowledge from free-text incident records (close call) and investigating the role of visualisation techniques in big data for effective risk communication. Currently he continues working at IRR as Research Fellow in the Big Data Risk Analysis program (BDRA).

Previously Miguel was Senior Research Technician in the Psychology Department (from 2005 till 2013) and Lecturer in the Electronics Engineering Department (2010-2011) at the University of Valencia. His work was focused on road and rail safety and human factors: assessing the risk level of the Spanish railway system, assessing significant changes in railways or developing different ad-hoc tools applied to road and rail safety management. Miguel has an MSc degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Valencia and a PhD degree in psychology from University of Valencia.

Research and Scholarship

Miguel Figueres’s research activity is in the field of Risk and Railway Safety as a part of the Strategic Partnership with the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB). In particular, Miguel is involved in the Big Data Risk Analysis program (BDRA) that investigates big data analytics techniques for efficient methods of risk management in the future. His current activities are focused on:

  • analysis of unstructured data (free text) of safety reporting systems based on NLP techniques and Visual Analytics (network text analysis),
  • knowledge engineering to build semantic layers between business processes and free text data sources in order to enable safety risk analysis.

He is recognised as human factors expert selected by the European Railway Agency (ERA/2012/SAF/CALLHF/01) to assist the National Investigation Body in some Member States in the investigation of railway accidents (Denmark, France, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Luxembourg, Spain, Italy, Estonia, Bulgaria and Croatia).

 

Research Degree Supervision

Miguel is interested in supervising risk and rail safety research related with Human Factors. In addition, he is interested in other domains such as road safety and accident investigation.

Enterprise Activities

Miguel was involved in enterprise activities in the developing of different railway safety research projects. The main companies where he participated were: Renfe Operadora & Adif, participating in the design of the Man Machine Interface of the Asfa Digital signalling system and determining the risk level of the Spanish railway system); Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV), developing ad-hoc tools related with rail safety and assessing significant changes; and Metro Madrid, conducting risk analysis.
