Biography

Yufang joined the university in January 2015 as Research Fellow in Cognitive Linguistics, working on a joint project with the School of Computing and Engineering. This project aims to develop computer-based methods to visualize text-worlds projected in forensic text for ease of evidential analysis.

Prior to this Yufang had been an Assistant Professor at the Department of English Language and Literature at Tzu Chi University in Taiwan from 2008 to 2013. She had also been a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at New York University for six months (2011/08~2012/01).

Yufang obtained her B.A. and M.A. degrees in English Literature from universities in Taiwan. She received her Ph.D in Applied Linguistics from Lancaster University in 2007, under the supervision of Prof. Mick Short. Her Ph.D research explored the stylistic differences between the two different editions of The Magus by John Fowles and demonstrated how corpus methodology could contribute to stylistic comparative study. The thesis was published as a research monograph, Corpus Stylistics in Principles and Practice: A Stylistic Exploration of John Fowles' The Magus, by Bloomsbury in 2011.

Research and Scholarship

Her research interests encompass stylistics, corpus linguistics, pedagogical stylistics and translation studies. Based on her teaching experience in Taiwan, she is interested in exploring the feasibility of applying corpus stylistics to language and literature education, to develop a more refined and applicable corpus stylistics pedagogy that can be usefully applied to EFL literature classroom. Given her experience in translation practice, she is also interested in how to incorporate corpus methodology in translation studies.
