Biography

In August 2014 Radu took the role of Lecturer in Mechanical and Automotive Engineering within the School of Computing and Engineering and is year 2 tutor for BEng/MEng Mechanical Engineering, BEng/MEng Energy Engineering and BEng/MEng Automotive Engineering. His academic duties include teaching Applied Computer Aided Design, Mechanical Design, New Product Development and Investigative Studies.

Radu studied for a BEng in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Robots at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, graduating in 2008. He then moved on to complete Postgraduate studies in Computer aided design and flexible manufacturing systems at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, graduating in 2009.

He continued his studies completing a PhD in “Contributions regarding the use of modern techniques for measuring and modelling complex surfaces in the wear evaluation of total hip replacements”. Part of the work was done at the Centre for Precision Technologies at University of Huddersfield leading to graduation in 2011. Radu’s PhD work involved the development of methods for measuring and analysing material loss in orthopaedic hip replacement devices. 

As a direct result of his PhD in Radu was taken on as a Research Fellow at the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology.

He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has a PGCert in Higher Education Practice.

Outside of his research Radu has keen interests in hiking and snowboarding.

Research and Scholarship

Radu’s main areas of research include dimensional metrology, material loss analysis of orthopaedic devices, additive manufacturing and reverse engineering.

Radu has focused on the development of methods for measuring, analysing and visualizing material loss from orthopaedic devices and has a large number of publications on this subject. The overall aim is to promote best practice in measurement and analysis of retrieved medical devices.

Radu is an active member of standards development bodies as the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM) and International Standards Organisation (ISO). He is an active member of ASTM committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices, F42 on Additive Manufacturing Technologies and the US TAG to ISO/TC261.

Radu is a certified trainer for the EU wide metrology education 'driving licence' known as 'CMTrain' which is an industrially focused vocational blended training course in co-ordinate metrology and metrology best-practice.  The course has three levels from 'Operator' to 'Expert' and is performed with a combination of distance 'in-situ' learning and attendance based workshops. The course is run in partnership with a number of European universities. Renishaw are a collaborative provider in the UK and Rolls Royce and Hewlett Packard have adopted the course as a component of their core training for a number of their engineering metrologists.

The course has three levels from 'Operator' to 'Expert' to meet the demands of different types of CMM users and is performed with a combination of distance 'in-situ' learning with appropriate tutorial support and attendance based ‘hands-on’ workshops.  The content of the course covers aspects of general metrology good practice, geometry, co-ordinate metrology, quality management and statistical process control.

The course is aimed at anyone who is likely to interact with dimensional and co-ordinate metrology, specifically:

  • Measurement engineers
  • CMM programmers
  • Machine operators
  • Designers

CMTrain has been specifically developed to be complementary to the training offered by instrument manufacturers and can be integrated into an existing quality systems training programme.
