Dr Zhen Tong is working as a Research Fellow at the Centre for Precision Technologies (CPT) and EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology (CIMAM) at theUniversity of Huddersfield. He joined the CPT in May 2015 and is currently leading a group of researchers focusing on ultra-precision manufacturing technologies and their related applications. Dr Zhen Tong has a BEng degree in Material Modelling and Control System awarded in 2007, and an Master’s degree in Mechanical Manufacture and Automation awarded in 2010 from Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT). He moved to UK in 2011 after receiving the Scottish Overseas Research Students Awards (SORSAS) and James Watt Scholarship (JWS). He has a diversity of PhD study experience in UK by studying/research in three world class universities including Heriot-Watt University (2011.9-2012.7), University of Huddersfield (2012.8-2013.7), and University of Strathclyde (2013.8-2014.9) where he received his PhD degree on Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management in March 2015. During his PhD he has participated in five research projects ranging from the fundamental study of ultra-precision diamond machining to nano-characterization of nanostructures and subsurface damage. This unique research experience has made him a matured and excellent scholar in both the ultra-precision manufacturing and its related metrology.

Moreover, Dr Tong has worked as a Teaching Assistant in four world class Universities (University of Huddersfield, University of Strathclyde, Heriot-Watt University, and Harbin Institute of Technology). In 2013, he was recognised as an Associated Fellow in higher education academy (HEA) of UK.

Research and Scholarship

Dr Zhen Tong is currently working on the design, fabrication and assembling of key complex components/parts used in optical measurement system. Based at the manufacturing cell and nanolab of the CPT, he and his co-workers are trying to develop a new ultra-precision manufacturing chain of freeform optical lenses through the fundamental study of material removal mechanism, the optimization of processing technologies and the integration of online measurement system.

In the past five years, Dr Zhen Tong has been involved in the projects of EPSRC’s Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology (EP/I033424/1), EPSRC’s Micro_3D (EP/K018345/1), Sino-UK Higher Education Research Partnership for PhD Studies (CPT508), and National Funds for Distinguished Young Scholars of China (No.50925521).

Research interest
His interest covers a wide range of micro/nano fabrication techniques as well as their applications in optics and bio-engineering including:

  • fundamental study of ultra-precision diamond machining (experimental test and multi-scale simulation);
  • deterministic fabrication of functional freeform/structured surface (SPDT, micro milling, grinding and polishing);
  • the fabrication, assembling and related functional test of key complex optical components/parts;
  • injection mould fabrication and related measurement;
  • development and prototype of components/parts for high added value products (work closely with industry).
