Biography

Andrew joined the Medium Energy Ion Scattering (MEIS) Facility at the International Institute for Accelerator Applications (IIAA), University of Huddersfield in October, 2015.  His current role at Huddersfield is to provide a computational capability for beam interaction physics, to assist with the consolidation and expansion of the MEIS facility and to assist with and help further develop the MEIS research programme.  Prior to joining Huddersfield, PhD research was undertaken at the University of York (York Plasma Institute) and concerned the use of laser produced plasma sources as probes for plasma opacity, a source for fast particle production and the 2D imaging of hydrodynamic instabilities.  Experimental work involved multi-institutional experiments using large scale laser facilities, such as the Central Laser Facility (CLF) near Didcot, UK and facilities overseas in Prague and Mumbai.  He gained postdoctoral experience at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) researching detector technology for multi-spectral (colour) x-ray imaging (from Sep 2011 to Dec 2012) and at the University of York developing a computational framework to simulate EUV and X-ray beam interaction with solid material (from Jan 2013 to Oct 2015).

Research and Scholarship

Current research activities include:

Developing novel techniques in the formation (via pulsed laser deposition) and characterisation (using MEIS and Hall effect measurements) of nano-scale, single and multi-layered materials such as:

  • pulsed laser (UV and EUV) deposited thin films
  • complex functional oxide heterostructure materials
  • superlattice structures

MEIS analysis of silicon wafers doped using Plasma Assisted Doping (PLAD)

Hydrodynamic and spectroscopic simulation of laser produced plasmas

Research Degree Supervision

Analysing the use of new capillary discharge laser technology, operating at 46.9nm, for pulsed laser deposition of thin films.  Through using the MEIS facility at Huddersfield these novel PLD films will be analysed in term of their composition, uniformity and interface abruptness, etc. by comparing the spectra with simulations.
