The research work we undertake in the CPT is driven by the needs of industry and takes us to many high-profile companies throughout the UK and abroad. My work concentrates on improving the maintenance performance of manufacturing systems by analysing the equipment used to produce parts. My area of special interest is maintaining the capability of the CNC production machines and investigating the strategies of calibrations to produce parts with improved accuracy, while not reducing machine tool availability or production throughput.
Our research group has a significant level of expertise in measurement and compensation of geometric, thermal, dynamic and load-dependent errors. I have been integral to the success of the University of Huddersfield’s maintenance performance measurement and management to improve the accuracy of CNC machine tools by establishing a new cost-model to highlight the difference between failure modes for standard maintenance and accuracy related calibration which will assist in decision processes for high-value manufacturing at all scales of production.
My industrial experiences at oil and gas companies are a major influence on my research and teaching, contributing to all elements of my taught modules and informing new research projects at postgraduate level.
