James Dyer joined the University of Huddersfield as part-time staff in 2014. He became a full-time Lecturer and Researcher in the school of Art Design and Architecture in 2017. Whilst broadly contributing to Studio and R&D modules, he leads the Theory as Practice module in Graphic Design and Animation year 2.

James is currently approaching the end of his PhD in New Media and Design Theory at the University of Huddersfield after receiving scholarship funding in 2015. He was awarded his Masters in New Media and Digital Culture  at Utrecht University in 2015 and received his bachelors in Multimedia Design at the University of Huddersfield in 2013.

Research and Scholarship

James’ thesis exaggerates the cleft between process-oriented and substance-oriented perspectives on new media culture with a specific emphasis on technologies concerning health and wellbeing. His writing works towards the fabulation of critical alternatives to traditional technological ends — beyond optimisations, enhancements, and upgrades — by using design fictions as a way to creatively re-orient change towards open and plural ends.

James’ research folds traditional process-philosophical thinkers into new assemblies with established contemporary design theorists and practitioners and nascent cultural events.

James has presented his research at Berlin University of the Arts (UdK), Universität Mannheim Germany, Design Academy Eindhoven, Goldsmiths University of London, and is featured in international peer-reviewed publications.
