Biography

Qualifications: BA(Hons), MSc, MPhil, PhD, CertEd, FHEA

Roy Fisher is Professor of Education and Head of the Department of Initial Teacher Education. He is an educational researcher and lifelong learning sector teacher educator who has been a member of the School of Education and Professional Development since 1996, having previously worked in the School on secondment from Huddersfield Technical College (1992-1994). He was first appointed as a further education lecturer in 1978 and went on to accumulate 15 years further education service in various roles. Roy's current responsibilities include managing quality assurance within the School and across the provision which it operates in collaboration with partner institutions. He is a member of the School's Senior Management Team, its Graduate Education Group and its Teaching and Learning Committee, as well as of the University's Standing Committee on Collaborative Provision and Quality and Standards Advisory Group. Between 2009 and 2012 he was a member of the University’s Teaching and Learning Committee. He is a current member of the member of the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers (UCET) Management Forum.

As an undergraduate Roy read history at Aberyswyth. He later developed an interest in sociology, and, through a master's degree at Bradford, specifically in the sociology of education. His MPhil, undertaken in the Department of Sociology at the University of Leeds, reviewed Marxist contributions to the sociology of education. His doctoral research, (at Huddersfield), brought together his long term interests in history and sociology through a socio-historical study of the vocational curriculum in England between 1974 and 1994. This study employed the ideas of Gramsci, Althusser, Foucault and Lyotard to provide a multi-perspectival analytical account of vocationalism.

Between 1998 and 2008 Roy was founding chair and subsequently co-convenor of the Learning and Skills Research Network in the Yorkshire and Humberside Region. From 2000-2004 Roy was Director of the University’s Post-Compulsory Education and Training Research Unit and was Co-Director, with Professor James Avis, of its Centre for Research in Post-Compulsory Education from 2004 until 2012.

He is a member of the British Educational Research Association and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Roy is a member (2008 to-current) of the editorial board of the Journal of Vocational Education and Training.
