Biography

Dr. Yun Gao works as an academic and an architect. She is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture and Course Leader for BA programme at the University of Huddersfield. Yun received her PhD in Architecture from the University of Edinburgh in 1998. Her academic research explores design of socially responsible and environmentally sustainable built environment, traditional and cultural changes reflected in architectural and urban development in developing countries, and cross-cultural architectural design and education. After receiving her Ph.D, Yun worked with architectural practices in Bristol and became an RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Chartered Architect and ARB (Architects Registration Board) Registered Architect before subsequently joining the University of Huddersfield in 2005.

Yun’s book Architecture of Dai Nationality in Yunnan was published by Beijing University Press in 2003. She was funded by HEA (Higher Education Academy) in the UK to publish the book Being There on cross culture architectural design in 2010. Yun is currently completing another book, co-authored with Professor Nicholas Temple, entitled The Temporality of Building: European and Chinese Perspectives on Architecture and Heritage, which will be published by Routledge in 2018.

Research funding Yun has been awarded include those from Higher Education Academy, and British Council, University of Huddersfield Teaching and Learning Funding and School Research Funding. She was recently awarded a grant from China of 200,000RMB (about £23,500) over two-years (2017-2018) to support research activities related to sustainable rural development in China.

Yun worked as academic editor for a Special Issue for the journal Buildings in July 2016. She is member of the Editorial Board for the AAE (Association of Architectural Educators, UK) journal Charrette and a reviewer for journals Habitat International and Buildings, and reviewer for Research Development Fund in Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, China. She was also one of the co-organisers of the architectural exhibition held in Huddersfield in 2016 entitled ‘Rural/Urban: The Changing Face of Globalisation’.

Yun has held a Visiting Professorship at the Yunnan Arts University in China since 2010 and recently have been awarded the title of Distinguished Professor in Chongqing Jiaotong University from 1st January 2017 to 30th December 2018.

Undertook the University Teaching and Learing Project 2011 to study Chinese Students Learning Experience in the UK. The result of the study informed the strategy to set up International Students Support Programme in 2013 which require international students to attend 2 hours training courses each week on English writing and research skills; It also provided the evidence for set up support funding for International Research Students for their English improvement on theses.

Invited to participate in the discussion panel at the BBC Radio 4’s programme “Woman’s Hour” on 8th February 2013 to talk about the differences between British and Chinese women’s Education.

Invited to be key note speaker in YAU in June 2018 for international discussion forum for “Creative Yunnan”

Acted as the international coordinator for the Chinese market for the school from 2006 to 2011, and the international coordinator for the department at the same period. Developing academic relationships between universities was achieved at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Can speak fluently English and Chinese.

Organised 3 staff from universities in China have undertaken their Ph.D research at Huddersfield, and five groups of more than 200 architecture and textile students from Huddersfield went to China and teamed up with Chinese students for joint design projects in 2008 and 2009, 2010 and 2012.

Organised the students study trip to Yunnan in 2012 led to the works of 25 architectural students being invited to an International Exhibition “Beautiful Yunnan”. 18 student projects were also published in the book produced for the exhibition, and in the UK one student’s design won the RIBA Yorkshire White Rose Student Silver Award in 2013.

Gave talks on Dai Houses in South China at the Institut Parisien de Recherche Architecture Urbanistique Societe, Paris, in April 1997.
