Biography

I took up my current post as Director of Teaching and Learning in September 2015 as a member of the School Executive.  I provide leadership in innovative teaching and learning practices within the School and lead the development of the Schools Teaching and Learning Strategy and the effective implementation of the University Teaching and Learning Strategy. Prior to this I was the Head of Pre-registration Nursing leading the continued innovation and quality enhancement of pre-registration nursing education in the Department of Health Sciences. I am also the University's official correspondent for the Nursing and Midwifery Council and an NMC Quality Assurance Reviewer. I contribute to teaching across the Department of Health Sciences. I have a specific interest in service user and carer / public and patient involvement and completed my PhD in this subject area in August 2014.

I joined the University in July 2004 after a long career in the NHS working in a variety of settings as a Nurse, Midwife and Health Visitor. This included 14 years in Primary Care as a Health Visitor and Specialist Nurse for the Homeless, Asylum Seekers and Refugees.Since joining the University I have had a number of roles, starting out as a Senior Lecturer in Child Nursing, progressing to Head of Division of Child Nursing in April 2009, then Joint Head of Division of Learning Disability and Child Nursing from September 2009. I took up the post of Joint Head of Undergraduate Nursing in August 2010, leading out on the development of the all-graduate nursing course that was successfully validated in 2012. I then became Head of Pre-registration Nursing in September 2012 leading the continued innovation and quality enhancement of pre-registration nursing education.

Alongside this I was appointed to a competitive secondment opportunity as a Teaching Fellow for the Assessment and Learning in Practice Settings (ALPS), Higher Education Funding Council for England Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning from February 2007 to July 2010. This involved collaborative work as the School lead for service user and carer involvement and involved a step change into working regionally and nationally as one of five Higher Education Institutions that involved 16 health and social care professions.

Research and Scholarship

I completed my PhD by portfolio in August 2014, this included a series of publications related to service user and carer engagement in health and social care education. I have undertaken and participated in a number of studies pertaining to this subject area. This has included a mixed methods study in relation to what matters to service users and carer in decision making. This work was collaborative and funded by the Assessment and Learning in Practice Settings (ALPS) Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL).

I have also undertaken work following a narrative inquiry approach, investigating the impact of service user and carer involvement on service users and cares and student learning and subsequent practice.

University research group memberships

I am a member of the Institute for Research in Citizenship and Applied Human Sciences and the Centre for Applied Childhood, Youth and Family Research.
