Geoffrey Cox began his musical career in London as a guitarist in a post-punk, new wave band in 1979. Rejecting all forms of structured musical learning, he submerged himself in various rock groups before finally embarking on a course of musical study at Liverpool Community College in 1989 which led to the formation of a jazz-influenced quintet playing mostly his own music. This, in turn, led to an exploration of classical and contemporary music through an HND. He completed a First class honours degree in composition at Huddersfield in 1999 and a PhD in 2007 which focuses on the use of borrowed material in sampled and written form across a wide variety of musical genres. Other specialisms include Popular Musicology (the history and effect of technological developments on popular music) and working with visual images in a musical context, work which has become increasingly important to his output.

Tree People (Cox) A 15 minute 5.1 audio-only redux of the soundtrack for Tree People (2014)
Tree People (Cox) A 45-minute documentary film, made over the last four years, that was premiered as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Colne Valley Tree Society in Spring 2014. The film is about the history and activities of the Society that has been planting trees in the Colne Valley, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, since 1964. Geoff has been planting with the group every year since 1997. In terms of music research, the documentary primarily focuses on the creative use and manipulation of diegetic sound, and music that includes a musical score, performed by local brass band, the Slaithwaite Band (the second showing of the film took place at the band room on 2/5/14).

There is an audiovisual performance of a poem by Lina Valutyte that first presents a fixed narrative setting for the poem, using the idea of a place as something remembered from afar, and then proceeds to deconstruct both sound and image. As the materials dissolve and re-align themselves through a process that is both partially random and directed, novel juxtapositions and implied meanings are generated, such that the remembrance of 'there' becomes evermore fragmented and distant. The visual concept of the piece was developed by myself and Keith Marley.
