Biography

Dr. Kaiwei Wang is currently a post doctoral research fellow sponsored by EPSRC. He received his BSc and PhD degree in 2001 and 2005 respectively, both at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. He joined the Centre for Precision Technologies in October 2005 as a postdoctoral Research Fellow under the support of International Incoming Fellowship awarded by the Royal Society. To date his research has been primarily concerned with fibre interferometry in surface measurement and heterodyne interferometry for dimensional measurement.

Research and Scholarship

Dr. Wang’s main research direction is optical instrumentation for surface and length measurement. His relevant experience includes:

  1. Research on the achromatic frequency shifting method and applications based on double-gratings sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant No. 50375084). The project focused on developing a new frequency shifting technique in order to improve the signal-to-noise ratio in low-coherence heterodyne interferometry.  The research led to the “Best PhD Dissertation” awarded by Tsinghua University in 2005, 1 patent and 3 published papers.
  2. Research on the influence of incident optical wave-front on intensity distribution of the non-diffracting beam for large scale straightness measurement. Both experiment and theoretical analysis demonstrated that by using the same binary optical element, the propagation range of non-diffracting beam illuminated by an optical divergent spherical wave can be extended from 70m to 100m compared with that illuminated by a plane wave.
  3. Investigation on phase shifting methods for 3D surface measurement in cooperation with Omron Corporation. Typical key techniques of phase shifting methods were surveyed in detail. Preliminary experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of fringe spatial frequency and fringe pattern on the measurement accuracy.
  4. Exploration of optical fibre interferometry for fast on-line surface measurement. Sponsored by the Royal Society, Dr. Wang has carried out research on optical fibre interferometry for fast on-line surface measurement at the Centre for Precision Technologies in the University of Huddersfield. New configuration of optical probes have been constructed and tested to effectively improve the system stability and measurement speed. This work is based on the previous research carried out at the Centre for Precision Technologies. The research results have led to 1 paper and 1 international patent.

Dr. Wang has authored 12 papers, 2 patents on optical measurement. He has been awarded the Royal Society International Incoming Fellowship, the Honor of “Exceptional graduated PhD” of Tsinghua University and First-class Award of Mechanical Innovation Contest of Tsinghua University, China, due to his expertise on optical instrumentation and mechanical design.
