Biography

My first degree is in English from Leeds University. I returned to higher education as a mature student some years later, gaining an MSc with Distinction in Software Development from the University of Huddersfield. I then went on to study for my Ph.D. at Huddersfield, with Prof. Lee McCluskey as my director of studies. My research was in Artificial Intelligence (AI) Planning and investigated a new object-centred approach to planning, and included the development of three different planning engines. During my time as a PhD student, I also worked as a part-time lecturer at the University. I was then employed as a Research Assistant, where part of my role was to help with the organisation and running of the Planning and Scheduling Special Interest Group Workshop. I finally became a full-time lecturer in the (then) Dept of Computing in 1999. I have taught a wide range of topics within Computing, including Java programming, software development methods, internet application development, AI, formal methods, software engineering, computing science and research methods at both undergraduate and M.Sc. level. My administrative duties have included being a Course leader, and I am currently an Admissions Tutor.

Research and Scholarship

My main research area is AI Planning. My Ph.D. investigated taking an object-centred approach to planning. This built on previous work by my Supervisory team on object-centred domain modelling. I developed three different object-centred planning engines which could exploit the structure of these domain models. I have since undertaken research with colleagues into planning domain model definition and validation. In 2000 I was the Programme Chair for the Symposium "Artificial Intelligence Planning and Intelligent Agents ", held as part of AISB-00 at the University of Birmingham. In 2006 I organised the ICAPS '06 Summer School in AI planning in the Lake District. I have recently begun an investigation into developing the use of AI planning techniques in computer games.
