Biography

After leaving Halifax Technical High School I commenced work with Kitchen & Wade Ltd, a Machine Tool manufacturer. Following a five year apprenticeship on the shop floor and drawing office I took a four year sandwich degree at the former Hendon College of Technology now Middlesex University, gaining a 2:1 BSc (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering.

On completion of my degree course I joined the Research and Development department of William Asquith Ltd, manufacturers of a wide range of Machine Tools ranging from manually operated radial drilling machines to extremely sophisticated "state of the art " Machining Centres, where I became Chief Development Engineer in 1981.

In 1993 I became Technical Manager of AsquithButler Ltd, responsible for all aspects of Research and Development including, hydraulics, pneumatics, hydrostatics, structural analysis, concrete foundation design, feed and spindle drives, machine testing and the quality control department. The company manufactured machines for use in the Aerospace, Rail, Automotive and Nuclear industries.

In 2000 a move to Norman Hargreaves Ltd as Chief Engineer made me responsible for the design and build of such machines as a 270 tonne moving column ram type milling machine for the manufacture of die moulds for the American steel industry to be used for stamping out titanium undercarriage parts for Boeing aircraft.

After a period with AMBAS Consulting Engineers providing services such as "expert witness ", machine/foundation design, European Safety Standards Work and "CE " marking etc, I was invited by Professor Derek Ford to join the University of Huddersfield as a principal lecturer and leader of the Engineering Control and Machine Performance Research Group (ECMPG).

In 2003 I became Technical Director of the Centre for Precision Technologies (a world renowned research team) within the School of Computing and Engineering, working closely with Professor Liam Blunt and Professor Jane Jiang.

My duties include lecturing to Masters Courses on Precision Engineering and supervision of the research activities of the ECMPG group which comprises of 13 personnel, 6 of whom are Post Doctoral and 4 are currently carrying out PhD studies.

Research and Scholarship

Having worked in the machine tool industry for a considerable time my experience has given me a firm in-site into the requirements of the industry including both the machine manufacturers and the machine end users.

The research carried out within the team is biased towards industrial applications and we have an extremely strong relationship with many industrial partners both nationally and internationally.

These activities are carried out in collaboration typically with such companies as Airbus UK, Siemens, Rolls- Royce, Heidenhain, Hardinge / Bridgeport, Cincinnati, Bridgeport, Yamazaki, Carl Zeiss and BAe systems.

Our areas of activity and expertise include almost all aspects of machine tool technology, in particular , Precision engineering metrology, Machine tool design and analysis, Control systems, Spindle and feed drives, Structures, Concrete foundations, Hydrostatics, Hydraulics, Finite Element Analysis, Modal analysis, Coolant and Cooling systems, Error avoidance, reduction and compensation techniques.

To support the above research activities the group has progressively expanded its impressive range of metrology equipment including laser interferometers, thermal imaging equipment, modal analysis equipment etc and thanks to University funding has recently added another £190,000 Co-ordinate Measuring Machine to its inventory and will shortly see the arrival of a new 5-axis £200,000 machining centre.

Over the last 10 years, under the guidance of Professor Ford and more recently myself the group has obtained over £4 million cash support from academic and industrial grants and over £10 million of in kind support. The group has to thank the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council for much of its academic funding and has recently received a grading from the Science Council of "Tending to Outstanding " upon completion of the ROBCON project.

In addition to our many research activities the group also offer a number of services to industry such as machine calibration and machine Volumetric error Compensation Systems (VCS) which have been developed for improving the accuracy of machine tools. A number of systems have been installed ranging from small machining centres used for manufacture of microwave guide systems (UK) to large moving gantry machines used for the manufacture of aircraft fuselages (USA).
