Dr. Shuming Yang started as a postdoctoral research fellow sponsored by Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) from May 2009. He received his BSc and BA degrees both in 2002 in Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU), China, MSc and PhD degrees in 2005 and 2009 in XJTU, China and University of Huddersfield, UK respectively. His research interests include micro/nano-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS), nanotechnology in devices and material, integrated photonics, interferometry systems for on-line surface measurements.

Research and Scholarship

Dr. Shuming Yang’s main researches include:

  1. Development of an optical chip interferometry system for on-line surface measurements. This research has led to ‘Vice Chancellor’s Award for an Outstanding Research Degree Thesis’.
  2. Investigation of measurement and assessment methods for super-smooth surfaces. It aims to explore an efficient characterisation approach for nano-scale surfaces
  3. Development of an instrument used for MEMS materials characterisation. It is based on nanoindentation and used to measure the mechanical properties of MEMS materials, such as hardness, Young’s models etc.
  4. Fabrication of a nano-scale reference templet by a scanning probe microscope.
  5. Investigation of on-line measurements of the pit geometry of compact discs using a scanning probe microscope.
  6. Exploration of an auto-focusing method for camera imaging.
