Biography

My interest in Electrical Engineering was first sparked at age 14 when I got my first Short Wave radio. Spurred on to study the subject, I first arrived in Huddersfield in 1977 to study Electrical Engineering at the then Huddersfield Polytechnic. After graduating, I stayed on to do a PhD in Optical Communications in collaboration with British Telecom Research Labs. Then came a two year Research Fellowship (again with British Telecom) working on Pulse Position Modulation (an area I am still working in) before finally taking up a permanent academic post here at Huddersfield. Since joining the staff I have taught on a variety of courses but mainly in the area of electromagnetism and communications. I have written three books and published many papers in the area of optical communications. One of my papers won the Marconi Premium for being the best paper with engineering content in the Journal if the IERE. I am first year tutor as well as helping out with recruitment.

I am now embarking on a new area of work that stemmed from my interest in using optical fibre in the home for control and monitoring purposes. A cross-disciplinary group has been formed that is currently examining ways of using technology to make existing houses more sustainable without major disruptions to the home or its surroundings. Using a variety of measures we hope to reduce a homes reliance on expensive grid electricity and gas heating.

Outside the University I like gardening, cooking and reading.

Research and Scholarship

I have always been fascinated by all areas of Electrical Engineering ever since I made a motor out of wire, a magnet and a cotton reel. However communications has been my main interest for a number of years. During my PhD I developed a circuit that was fabricated in I.C. form for use in optical communications links. The circuit typology was adopted by many manufacturers for a number of years. Following on from my PhD I carried on researching the area of optical communications and the use of pulse position modulation in particular. This led to some work on high-speed ECL circuitry and pulsing circuits. One of my areas of work is concerned with coding for digital PPM systems. In a drive to reduce the bandwidth expansion effects of digital PPM I have invented three coding techniques that reduce the processing speed of the drive electronics. I have been invited to lecture on my research at the Al-Baath University in Syria on two separate occasions. 

I am also involved in a project to detect concealed weapons in large areas. This project uses pulsed, high currents to generate a magnetic field that is picked up by sensitive detectors. In a further change of direction from communications, I have developed an interest in sustainable housing from a technology point of view. The idea is to test current sustainable technology (solar panels, etc) in existing homes rather than in new-build, zero emission homes. In this way we hope to show what can be done to minimise power consumption in the home and hence save the planet.

Research Degree Supervision

General project areas

White light communication using high power LEDs. The project uses flood light LEDS to carry digital signals to users under the flood light. We are interested in the optimum code for such an application.

WLAN802.11e Performance Evaluation using OPNET. We are interested in determining the best way of transmitting data (Web pages for instance) whilst maintaining quality of service for VoIP and video.

The use of Tuned Front End Optical Receiver and Pulse Position Modulation. Tuned front ends are widely used in RF circuits where they minimise noise. Their use in baseband signalling is not very common because of inter symbol interference. This project examines different coding schemes to see if tuned circuits can be used in digital links.

MIMO (Multiple in Multiple Out) Using Optical Techniques and Digital Pulse Position Modulation:  With  Investigation of Alternative Coding Schemes Leading to Optimal Selection of the Modulation Scheme for the MIMO. This project investigates the use of digital PPM with optical MIMO to identify the best coding scheme.

Implementation of DiBit PPM using VHDL and an FPGA. DiBit is a novel Pulse Position Modulation (PPM) scheme invented here at the University. The project aims to test the performance of the new scheme.

Analysis of Offset Pulse Position Modulation. This is a novel coding scheme and the theory needs to be developed.

  • PofNet (2014) My involvement was to advise on the use of optical fibre in the home. It has led to my taking up a non-executive directorship in the firm
  • So Savvy (2005) I was asked to perfrom various tests on a novel electrical cable for data transmission.
  • AOS Technology (2001) I designed a low-power optical receiver for use monitoring the stress on a yacht.
  • fSONA, Canada (1998) I advised on the design of a free-space opitcal link for use between buildings
  • Joint European Torus (1995) I was asked to calculate the energy stored in a waveguide used for RF heating
  • Sabre Banner (1994) I developed a multiplexed optical link for use in data centres
  • British Telecom (1992) This was a continuation of my PhD research

Directorships:

  • IRCOM (2000-2005) We produced a low-cost infra-red digital communications link with a range of 100m. The aim was to install it on factory floors and between buildings. It ran at a speed of 100 Mbit/s and the product was taken through to production.
  • HiSolar (2013-present) We have produced a bespoke solar powered LED light. The product is in manufacture.
  • POFNet (2015-present) We are involved in the use of plastic optical fibre in the home. The aim is to extend WiFi signals and carry entertainment to all rooms in the house.
