Biography

Qualifications BSc (Hons), CertEd, MSc

Alison Ryan is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education and Professional Development specialising in teaching about Literacy, maths and SEND. Since joining the University full time in 2002 she has been responsible for delivering on a number of programmes including the Post 16 Initial Teacher Training Pre-service and In-Service courses, the Foundation Degree in Learning Support, BA Early Years, BA Childhood Studies and the MA in Professional Development.

Alison's first degree is in Social and Environmental Sciences and her teaching career started in 1988 after qualifying at the School of Education in Huddersfield with a Certificate in Education (Special Needs). Her first roles were working with 16-19 year old students with special needs in a London FE college and working as a Hearing Impaired Support tutor at a Huddersfield secondary school.

Subsequently she spent 10 years working for Huddersfield Technical College in the Adult and Community Education sections teaching Literacy, Numeracy and ICT including Family Learning provision.

She undertook an MSc in Multimedia and Education in 2002 and a Certificate in Maths Education in 2008. Her research interests are the teaching and learning of maths across all sectors and she is currently undertaking a PhD looking at the role of informal learning within medieval re-enactment.

Research Degree Supervision

Supervision of MA dissertations in maths education topics such as the introduction of Shanghai Maths into special education and communication in the maths classroom.

Teaching and Professional Activities

Currently teaching BA undergraduate modules in Literacy and Maths in the Early Years and Key Stage 1, Language and Communication, Perspectives on Learning and Development and Senior Practitioner. Module leader for the MA module Exploring Learning and Teaching. BA and MA supervision in SEND and maths related topics.
