Biography

Dr Hyunkook Lee is a Senior Lecturer in Music Technology and Production and the leader of the Applied Psychoacoustics Lab (APL) at the University of Huddersfield. He joined Huddersfield in 2010 and developed research in the area of 3D audio psychoacoustics as well as undergraduate modules such as Acoustics and Concert hall recording technique. In 2014 he has established the APL, a research group studying the mechanism of human auditory perception and developing new audio algorithms for practical applications. He has undertaken a number of consultancy works for companies such as Samsung Electronics, Volvo Car and L-ISA. Hyunkook is also an experienced recording and mixing engineer specialising in acoustic music.

Before joining Huddersfield, Dr Lee was a Senior Research Engineer at LG Electronics in South Korea, where he led a project to develop audio post-processing algorithms for LG mobile phones. He has also participated in MPEG audio codec standardisation activities, contributing to the developments of codecs such as SAOC and USAC.

Hyunkook graduated from the music and sound recording (Tonmeister) course at the University of Surrey in 2002. During the course he spent a placement year as an assistant engineer at Metropolis studios in London. He gained his PhD from the same university in 2006. His PhD research was concerned with the subjective effects and objective measurements of interchannel crosstalk in multichannel microphone techniques. 

Research and Scholarship

Dr Lee’s research primarily focuses on the modelling of auditory perceptual mechanisms related to sound recording and reproduction and the application of the models in the development of new audio capturing and rendering methods. He currently supervises 5 PhD and 5 undergraduate students for their research at the Applied Psychoacoustics Lab (APL).

Past and ongoing projects at the APL include EPSRC-funded Perceptual Rendering of Vertical Image Width for 3D Multichannel Audio (EP/L019906/1), Capturing and Rendering of Audio for Virtual Reality (VR), Frequency-Dependent 3D Sound Localisation, Objective Measurement of Auditory-Visual Interaction in 3D Soundscape Perception, The Effect of Interchannel Decorrelation on Vertical Image Spread, The Role of Pianne-Related Cues in Median Plane Localisation, and Perceptual Optimisation of Virtual Acoustics. Research outputs from the above projects have strong practical implications as well as academic values. For example, a finding from his 3D microphone array research was exploited in the TEC Award winning ORTF-3D microphone array by Schopes. Also a number of software packages have been developed at the APL based on Dr Lee’s research.

Teaching and Professional Activities

Dr Lee teaches Acoustics and Psychoacoustics, Concert hall and location recording and Live music production. He is also responsible for supervising research by final year music technology students and post-graduate research students. He initialized a placement at Fraunhofer IIS, Germany, where two or three of music technology students are recruited as research interns every year.
