Position: Research Fellow, Department of Accountancy, Finance and Economics

Leire San Jose is currently a Visiting Research Fellow in the Business School, having been employed as a Research Fellow at the University of Huddersfield in 2009. She collaborates with Professor Chris Cowton, with a particular focus on research into the ethics of trade credit.

Accredited as a Full Professor in the Basque Country, Leire is Associate Professor in Finance at the University of the Basque Country, Bilbao, Spain. She is Director of the  Ethics in Finance & Social Value Research Group in Bilbao.  She is a BA Business Studies graduate of the University of the Basque Country and holds a post graduate diploma in Research Methods for Business and Social Sciences (Finance area). She completed her PhD about Corporate Cash Management and Information & Communications Technology in January 2006, receiving the University of the Basque Country’s special award for the best thesis. In addition to spending 2009 at the University of Huddersfield, during January 2008 she was a Visiting Scholar at Loyola University Chicago under the supervision of Professor John Boatright, and during Summer 2017 she was a Visiting Scholar at Darden Business School under the supervision of Professor Edward Freeman.

Leire has published papers and books about ethics in trade credit, stakeholder theory, social value, negative equity, the use of the Delphi method in business ethics, and cash management. She is a member of the board of directors of European Business Ethics Network-Spain.

Research and Scholarship

At the University of the Basque Country, Leire teaches International Business Finance Management and Business Administration at undergraduate level and Cash Management on the MSc Finance Management. Her most important publications are about corporate cash management and new technologies, but her current research focuses on ethics in finance, specifically ethical aspects of trade credit and payment policies.
