Biography

Position: Professor of International Strategy, Associate Dean (International), Department of Management
Qualifications: BSc, PhD, FHEA, FRSA, FStratPS
 

John Anchor is Professor of International Strategy and Associate Dean (International) in the Business School. Previously, he has held posts as Head of Department, Principal Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Lecturer at the University of Huddersfield.

John is a career academic. His early aspiration was to be a scientist but as a result of taking a Management minor as part of his Bachelor’s degree he switched to the Social Sciences. His PhD in Industrial Economics was concerned with the factors influencing the allocation of resources to research and development (R&D) in the UK chemicals industry. Both his Bachelor’s degree and doctorate were obtained from the University of Manchester, where he stayed on as a research assistant for two years.

Public Service

In addition to his academic activities, John has had significant involvement in public affairs in general and in local government in particular, where he acted as a municipal Councillor. This included three years as Chair of a Housing Committee.

John acts as an academic referee for funding bodies, as well as a large number of academic journals and conferences.He has also delivered a number of invited lectures and talks internationally. He appears regularly in the media.


Consultancy

John has acted as a consultant to Cambridge Econometrics, University of Cambridge in relation to their bi-annual survey of “Industry and the British Economy”. He has also undertaken work with Ecorys, a Belgian consultancy, in relation to a European Commission funded study of the European glass and cement industries, in association with Cambridge Econometrics.

Administrative Responsibilities

John is Associate Dean (International) in the Business School. This means that he is responsible for the recruitment of international students and the development of international research and educational partnerships.

John has been actively involved in the leadership of research, teaching and internationalization in the University. This has included membership of all the main committees, as well as of a variety of project groups.

As Director of Graduate Education in the Business School, John was responsible for the validation of a Post Graduate Certificate in Research Methods (60 credits) which is compulsory for all new PhD students. John was also a member of the validation team for the School’s DBA (Doctor of Business Administration) programme.

Teaching and Professional Activities

John supervises a number of PhD students. He also contributes to a Master module concerned with risk management.

Quality Assurance

John has had considerable expertise in curriculum development in relation to taught programmes. He has also been involved in validation and reviews both internally and externally. His work in quality assurance has had a national and international focus and has included appointments with the UK’s Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) as a subject reviewer and as an auditor. In addition he has acted as an external examiner for a number of UK universities as well as for the Northern Consortium of UK universities (NCUK), in Malaysia and Pakistan.
