Tutition fee waiver scholarships

Vice-Chancellor’s Tuition Fee Waiver Scholarships for Postgraduate Research (PhD or Master’s by Research) in the School of Applied Sciences

Available only for graduates of the University of Huddersfield

These competitive 100% tuition fee waiver scholarships within the School of Applied Sciences are aimed at the very best Huddersfield graduates and are available for October 2021 entry for either full-time or part-time Master’s by Research (MRes) and PhD programs.

Eligibility criteria

A first-class honours degree in a relevant subject
or
A distinction at taught Master’s in a relevant subject
and

Have graduated from the University of Huddersfield in the last three years.

If applicants are due to graduate in the current academic year, then any offer will be conditional on degree outcome.

Prior to application, you should identify a project and a potential supervisor in the School. This can be done by discovering the research projects advertised on Coursefinder or through Pure profiles of prospective supervisors.

Prior to applying applicants should also contact the prospective supervisor who will be able to advise on the required additional non-tuition fee costs for the project.  These additional costs for Applied Science research degrees (sometimes known as bench fees) typically range from £1,000 - £12,000 per year, dependent upon the research project.

When you have identified a project, supervisor and confirmed that you can pay the additional bench fee costs (see above) please complete the online application form ensuring you include the project title, academic staff’s name, your CV and indicate you wish to be considered for a Vice Chancellor’s Tuition Fee Waiver.

As all research degree applications are assessed on a competitive basis if you are shortlisted for the VC tuition fee waiver scheme then you will be invited to an interview with the prospective supervisor and a senior member of academic staff within the School (conducted remotely via video conferencing as appropriate).

This will generally take place 2-4 weeks following the date of your application.

Expectations of successful VC tuition fee waiver research students

If you study full-time, you will need to dedicate 37 hours per week to your research degree and must not also be working full-time. If you study part-time, you should expect to dedicate 18 hours per week to the degree.

You will be expected to contribute up to 6 hours per week support to teaching (this typically is acting as a practical session demonstrator in classes led by an academic). 

Pay for any period of additional time at the end of your research degree (after 1 year MRes or 3 years PhD).
