What is the Concordat?
The Concordat is a statement of the expectations and responsibilities of researchers and their managers, employers and funders. Through the implementation of its principles, it aims to enhance the researcher workforce and thereby sustain research excellence.
Why is it important?
Successful implementation of the Concordat is crucial for two main reasons: funding and reputation. With increased competition and regulation around funding, it is vital that we embed the principles of the Concordat into our working practices. Our REF environment submission is one key example here. In short, the Concordat future proofs institutions that want to confidently say that they have research at the core of their strategic direction. Through its clear implementation, we are making strong strides towards research capacity building for REF2020.
How does it work?
The Concordat principles work because they provide an effective toolkit for building our capacity for research. They ensure that there can be a continuum of research by providing a mechanism for inspiring, developing and supporting our academic community, from PGR and ECR through to Professoriate.
What is being asked of you?
Successful implementation of the Concordat is dependent on senior managers (Vice-Chancellors, Pro-Vice Chancellors, Deans, Heads of Service, Heads of Departments and Divisions, research groups, etc.) across the institution working together to achieve the institution’s strategic goals. Clear communication is a key element of this process. Understanding the process is critically important to all those involved because without full commitment from all parties- the implementation will not be successful.
The following paper offers a structured outline of the actions we intend to take the Concordat forward. Details of all the projects involved are included along with a full implementation proposal.
