In this NIHR (National Institute for Health Research) funded programme of research we aim to describe the phenomenon of informed consent for coronary angioplasty in clinical practice from the perspectives of patients, carers and cardiologists. To achieve this we will interview participants, tape consent conversations in real life practice and survey cardiologists and patients in England. Findings and published evidence will be used to identify obstacles and enablers to best practice in informed consent.
This programme of work is funded by a National Institute for Health Research for Patient Benefit grant and includes:
- A systematic review of studies evaluating the effectiveness of informed consent for surgical procedures
- A grounded theory study exploring patients’ and cardiologists’ experiences of the process of informed consent for cardiac angioplasty (PCI)
- A national survey of the views of cardiologists and PCI patients about informed consent
- A knowledge mobilisation strategy to translate the findings into practice, including the development of a film for patients, the development of new patient guidance on informed consent and workshop events for patients and health professionals.
