Welcome to the Compassionate Leadership Hub
A leading centre for applied leadership practice, supporting organisations to be compassionate and effective.
Based at the National Health Innovation Campus, the Compassionate Leadership Hub brings together research, practice and cross-sector collaboration to support applied learning across leadership contexts.
Why a place-based approach to compassionate leadership
National data shows that organisations can no longer ignore health and wellbeing:
- The UK has 800,000 more people out of work due to health issues than in 20191
- Employers face an estimated £85bn annual cost linked to sickness absence and turnover2
- Mental health challenges are rising among younger workers, while physical health issues are increasing among older workers
In West Yorkshire, and in Kirklees in particular, the challenge is more acute:
- 1 in 6 households are workless (around 23,200 households)3
- 31.5% of people not working cite long-term sickness4
- Working days lost to sickness (1.6%) are above national and regional averages5
- Employment sits at 71%, with gender gaps and higher levels of health-related inactivity.6
Why compassionate leadership matters
There is a growing body of research evidencing the benefits of compassionate literature. Strong associations are identified with:
- Improved engagement
- Reduced burnout
- Increased productivity
- Strengthened innovation and problem-solving
- Supports better financial performance
- Stabilised teams through lower turnover and higher job satisfaction
In this context, compassionate leadership is a core leadership capability for organisations across our region.

How we help:
1. Accredited Leadership Training
Practical, certified Leading with Compassion programmes that help leaders improve performance, engagement and decision-making.
Delivered through open programmes at the University of Huddersfield or in-house for organisations.
2. Innovation
We design and test new approaches to developing compassionate leadership capabilities and create practical resources to support the application of learning within the workplace.
This includes a fully funded micro-credential and the development of flexible, modular learning to increase accessibility and impact.
3. Research and Insight
We combine academic rigour with practical experience to close the gap between theory and application.
Research conducted by Vintis in 2025 identified leadership capability gaps and we have translated these into future programmes.
4. Community and Collaboration
We convene leaders across sectors to tackle shared challenges and accelerate learning. We hosted a large-scale Hub event with 60+ leaders at our March 2026 launch.
The Hub connects business, health, education and public sector leaders, building on established activity with partners including the Center for Compassionate Leadership.
The Hub brings together academic, industry and global expertise.

NEWS: Hub Launch
The Compassionate Leadership Hub was launched on 25 March 2026 at the Emily Seddon Building, University of Huddersfield, bringing together over 60 leaders from health, education, public services, SMEs and the third sector.
The event marked the start of a cross-sector initiative focused on key leadership challenges, including workforce wellbeing, productivity and leading through complexity.
The programme featured national and international speakers, including Professor Michael West CBE, Laura Berland and Evan Harrel (Center for Compassionate Leadership), and Wendy Showell Nicholas — combining research, global insight and practical application.
Members of the Huddersfield Health Innovation Incubator (HHII) also showcased their work in health, wellbeing, coaching and organisational support, helping to establish a visible and connected community from the outset.
Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with leaders citing strong relevance to current challenges, high-quality speakers and valuable peer connections. Many identified clear, practical actions to take back into their organisations.
