CeReNeM - External Partners and Exchange Networks
CeReNeM’s network of academic and industry partners includes many of the leading international institutions for new music. These relationships provide key platforms for collaborative projects, jointly authored publications, staff and student exchange opportunities, and dissemination of resulting work through a network of festivals, ensembles, electronic music studios, publishers, record labels, and radio stations.
Academic exchange opportunities
Speculations in Sound International Research Network
Speculations in Sound is an international research network dedicated to cutting-edge developments in new music. Created and hosted by CeReNeM, the network brings together practitioners and scholars from some of the world’s leading institutions for new music and related disciplines to probe, question, and experiment in and around the most challenging and uncertain elements of our field.
The network comprises bilateral staff exchanges between partner institutions as well as central gatherings that bring together individual researchers working on specific, interrelated issues and challenges. In addition to exchange events, collaborative partnerships, network symposia, and guest lectures, the Speculations in Sound network facilitates collaborative projects between network partners that lead to dissemination through CeReNeM’s publication platforms and Industry Partners network.
Current network partners include staff from the following institutions: University of Chicago, Columbia University, Cornell University, Harvard University, Northwestern University (Bienen School of Music), UCSD, Virginia Tech, Université de Montréal, Simon Fraser University, National University of Singapore (Yong Siew Toh Conservatory), University of Aberdeen, University of Edinburgh, University of Oxford, Queen’s University Belfast, Kungliga Musikhögskolan (Sweden), IEM Graz, IRCAM, and NoTAM (Norwegian Network for Technology, Acoustics and Music).
CeReNeM’s International Research Network was created through the generous support of Huddersfield's University Research Fund (URF) and the support of its partner institutions.
Erasmus exchange partnerships
Huddersfield maintains bilateral Erasmus exchanges with Kunstuniversität Graz (KUG) and the Norwegian Academy of Music, Oslo, which have provided important opportunities for staff and student exchanges, concerts, and collaborative projects.
Additional exchange opportunities
Additional staff and student exchanges have been supported through the Santander Universities programme, including visits to Northwestern University, Georgia Tech, and Université de Montréal, and Huddersfield has a Memorandum of Understanding supporting exchange opportunities with Université de Montréal, Monash University (Australia), and CIRMMT (Canada).
Creative and Commercial Industry Partnerships
CeReNeM has ongoing partnerships or long-term project agreements with a number of key creative and commercial organisations, including hcmf//, NMC Records, Sound & Music, NoTAM, ELISION ensemble, Quatuor Bozzini, Apartment House, and new partnerships for 2018–20 with Ensemble Musikfabrik, Wet Ink, and the TRANSIT Festival for New Music.

Studio Residencies
CeReNeM hosts frequent residencies in its SPIRAL and HISS electronic music studios for visiting composers, performers, and recording/mastering engineers to realise projects that exploit the university’s excellent music technology facilities and equipment.
Residencies in recent years have included Jonty Harrison, Robert Normandeau, Hans Tutschku, Sam Pluta, Richard Scott, Terri Hron, Tom Challenger & Kit Downes, Annie Mahtani, Splice, Anders Tweit, a 3D ambisonics project with Jörn Nettingsmeier, several projects in exchange with NoTAM—including works by Anders Vinar, and Asbjorn Flo and instrumentalists Britt Pernille Froholm and Sarah-Jane Summers—and a Sound and Music Embedded Composers programme in collaboration with CMMAS (Mexico).
Many of these residencies have led to commercial CD releases and performances at major festivals.
