Services to industry
The Institute of Railway Research provides a range of industrial R&D and consultancy services to the railway industry in the UK and worldwide. We work across many industry sectors from heavy rail to light rail, infrastructure owners to vehicle manufacturers and industry safety bodies and regulators. We often partner with other consultants and other Universities to provide a tailored package of services to meet client’s needs. Our team collectively has over 80 years experience with a track record of meeting client’s needs by providing specialist engineering support. The services we offer include:
- Railway vehicle dynamic simulation (VAMPIRE, Simpack, etc.)
- Wheel-rail interface engineering and asset management
- Laboratory, on-vehicle and on-track testing
- Development of evidence based safety and maintenance standards
- Wheel-rail interface design assurance for new systems
- Investigation of wheel and rail defects and problem solving on vehicle fleets
- Derailment investigation
- Integrated engineering and economic modelling
- Supporting fleet specification, procurement and approval
- Development of condition monitoring and inspection systems
