History

This is the fourth symposia in the Drawing Conversations series. The Drawing Conversations symposia, exhibitions and publications are convened and led by Professor Jill Journeaux. The initial event Drawing Conversations: Collective and Collaborative Drawing was held at Coventry University in 2015, was accompanied by the exhibition Drawn Conversations and resulted in the book Collective and Collaborative Drawing in Contemporary Practice edited by Gorrill and Journeaux. In 2017 the second symposium, again held at Coventry University: Drawing Conversations 2: Body, Space, Place resulted a second book in that series edited by Jill Journeaux, Sara Reed and Helen Gorrill published in February 2020. "You and I are continuous beings" an exhibition held at Birmingham City University in May 2018, featured new work by the contributors to the first book, and the catalogue included the essay "Drawing as if Dancing Together" by Victoria Mitchell. The Drawing Conversations 3: Drawing Talking to the Sciences symposium was held at The Ruskin, Lancaster University in January 2020 and was accompanied by the exhibition Drawn to Investigate.

Call for Papers

Deadline: Thursday 30th April 2020

Papers are invited for this one-day symposium which will discuss how drawing practices and processes enable engagements with sites of history and narrative. Consideration will be given to drawing as an embodied act, drawing in the expanded field, variable in definition, and as both individual and collective processes. Exploring expanded drawing methodology through connecting and curating of sites' narrative and histories may involve capturing textures, vistas, traces, movement of history and narrative.

How does drawing engage with histories and narratives of sites? What can the processes and methods of drawing reveal about a particular site or place? What is the relationship of the final work to a site's history or narrative? How are history and narrative defined and reconsidered?

Twenty-minute papers are invited from artists, art historians and theoreticians and other in adjacent fields. Papers may include discussion of specific projects that have been undertaken, or be about particular works or ideas of others.
