Creative Scene was the Creative People and Places project for North Kirklees. Brigantia Creative is an organisation that supports positive social change through arts and culture. Stories in Motion features two series commissioned by Creative Scene to celebrate the voices and heritage of North Kirklees: the ‘Life in Our Towns’ series focusing on local stories, and a series of 4 films to celebrate 175 years of Dewsbury Train Station from different perspectives.

Dark Horse Theatre is an ensemble of highly trained actors with learning disabilities. Their work tours nationally and has a reputation for surprise, innovation, and the ability to reverse expectations in powerful and challenging ways. Appealing to a broad, general, and adult audience Dark Horse work is physical and visually impactful.

Dark Horse is also a leading vocational trainer of actors with learning disabilities and develops skills in preparation for work in the industry at the highest level. Dark Horse's Actor Training & Young Company create progression routes for people who want to pursue a creer in the creative industries and allow for actors to viably work in all performance media, creating opportunities for them to defy expectations and show audiences just how capable and talented they are.

The film “I Belong” was awarded Honorary Award for Efforts in the Social Filmmaking by the Activists without Borders film festival and was part of Manchester Health Film Festival official programme.

Huw Wahl is an artist and filmmaker whose work has been screened internationally at film festivals, art galleries, museums, universities, documentary art centres, and by sea onboard an engineless Thames sailing barge touring the South East coast of England. He has won several international awards with his films, and they've featured in publications like The Guardian, Sight and Sound, and The Wire, and received funding from organisations such as Arts Council England, The Henry Moore Foundation, and the Royal Photographic Society. Men's Talk Digital is a film making group for men who have experienced mental health issues. Run by Clear, the project is open to men over 18 who live in Kirklees.

Supported by Creative Frame CIC – MT Digital provides participants with training, equipment and support. MT Digital uses film-making to aid recovery, enabling men to come together in a safe space to learn new skills and create original material. As well as creating their own short films, the men work together on commissioned work.

Co-produced programmes of work have involved the men working alongside local community groups including - Andy's Man Club, Luke's Lad's, Platform One, Working Together Better Partnership, Kirklees MDC, Public Health, Community Cohesion, Clear, Anti-Stigma Kirklees, Brain in Hand, Kirklees Involvement Network, Create and Bloom.

 

Ministry of Colours

Ministry of Colours is a Huddersfield-based company that specialises in producing non-toxic colour powder using centuries-old traditions. They have created a unique range of bright and vivid colour powders that are ideal for celebrating the Hindu festival of Holi and using in colour runs and colour parties in general. They are working to spread the word about Holi to schools, colleges, universities and across the communities.

Beowulf (Proper Job Theatre featuring Supriya Nanjaran) (47) was a site-specific event and performance created for Kirklees Year of Music 2023 by Proper Job Theatre Company. The oldest known English poem has been adapted by five Yorkshire-based poets Ian McMillan, Michelle Scally-Clarke, Joel Simmy, Chris O'Connor and Franc Chamberlain, working with composer Leighton Jones (Beware of Trains) and Supriya Nagarajan (Manasamitra), on an original score telling the story of a female Beowulf with a visually arresting, musical celebration.

 

Celebrating 175 Years of Dewsbury Train Station (5), Creative Scene commissioned 4 rail-themed films to celebrate different stories and interpretations of Dewsbury Train Station. Films were curated and edited by Andy Wicks, Media Preview.

 

Celebration of Hope (21) was a special family friendly event at the Bagshaw Museum to mark the celebration of a new season, including craft activities indoors and outdoors, play, walkabout performance, savour some lovely food, join in with communal prayer and view the beautiful lantern display at sunset. Including artists Ranya Abdulateef, Helaina Sharpley and Cecil Green Arts, produced by Creative Scene.

 

Counterpoint Arts (30) is a leading national and international organisation in the field of arts, migration and cultural change.

 

Deighton Carnival (8) took place on Saturday 28 June 2025 from 12 noon to 7pm, bringing an afternoon full of fun, with lots of fabulous family activities complete with stage show and DJ, and the much-loved Carnival Procession.

 

Dewsbury Creative Town (42, 46) was delivered by Beam on behalf of Kirklees Council as part of the town’s 10-year blueprint vision. Over three years, the programme commissioned temporary and permanent public art installations, with opportunities for residents, businesses and community groups to contribute to the commissioning process, connecting Dewsbury’s heritage with future development.

 

Growing Colour Together (10) is a community-led initiative in Kirklees, UK, developing a district-wide natural dye garden to support sustainable textile practices. It enables individuals and groups to grow, harvest and use dye plants through workshops and shared resources. The project connects local, low-impact dye techniques with community learning and wellbeing.

 

Hepworth Feast (44) is an annual community event in Hepworth, West Yorkshire, held on the last Monday of June to mark the end of the 1665 Great Plague. It includes a brass band-led parade, a public tea, a united sing, local sports and a relay race.

 

Holmfirth Arts Festival (53) is an annual arts festival in the Holme Valley, West Yorkshire, established in 2007. The festival commissions new work, supports diverse artists, and presents events in alternative spaces inspired by the Pennine landscape, with activity that engages communities, connects arts and heritage, supports environmental aims, and builds local, regional and international links.

 

Honley Male Voice Choir (24) is a Huddersfield based choir founded in 1936, performing repertoire from traditional Male Voice Standards to popular and musical theatre, with regular charity and community concerts.

 

Life in Our Towns (33, 35, 37, 40, 49, 52) was a series of films commissioned by Creative Scene to celebrate  the diversity of the people and places that make up the towns of North Kirklees.

 

Makerworld (14), run by the Children’s Art School, offers free drop-in sessions for children and their families in The Piazza Centre Huddersfield and Dewsbury Princess of Wales precinct, offer interactive experiences that encourage hands-on engagement with art and extraordinary creative encounters.

 

Marshian Arts Trail (11) is a showcase of artwork created by people who live in and around Marsh which will be on display in shop windows and businesses in Westbourne Road in Marsh from Saturday 5 July - Sunday 13 July 2025. As well as the Arts Trail, there will be other events including a psychogeography walk, a craft group, a photography exhibition and open studio afternoons. Mrs Sunderland Festival (20): is an 11-day performing arts festival at Huddersfield Town Hall, bringing together over 5,000 performers across music, speech and drama, with workshops for a wide range of ages and needs. It includes showcase concerts, popular dance events, and a national Young Musician of the Year competition.

 

Our Biennale (19) was a festival of arts and culture made with children and young people in Kirklees that ran in 2018, 2020 and 2022. Produced by the Kirklees Local Cultural Education Partnership, Evoke, Our Biennale was led by The Children's Art School. Partners from Evoke collaborate with young people, artists, cultural organisations, and teachers in Kirklees to co-create this amazing festival for the whole community.

 

Refugee Week (30) is the world’s largest arts & culture festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary. Established in 1998 in the UK, Refugee Week takes place every year around World Refugee Day (20th June) and has since grown into a global movement

 

Sangam Festival (3) is a community festival celebrating South Asian arts, culture and heritage. Events and activities take place online, in indoor venues and at outdoor locations across Kirklees.

 

Sharing Stories, Standing Strong (12) was a collaborative project between the Lawrence Batley Theatre and Kirklees Libraries, taking a team of multi-disciplinary artists out into some Kirklees Libraries to work with residents in Ashbrow, Batley, Birkby, Dewsbury, Rawthorpe and Ravensthorpe to collaboratively create a new artwork, inspired by their stories. It was supported by Arts Council England.

 

The Safe Space Studio (16), run by Yorkshire Youth and Music, is a unique music production space in the heart of Huddersfield designed specifically to offer a safe place for young people to collaborate and make music together.

 

Yorkshire Sound Women’s Network (17) was established in 2015 by women working in sound technology who sought to use their skills and influence to address gender and racial inequality. The network aims to support an industry that welcomes, encourages and advances the inclusion of women and people of minority genders at all levels, from studio floor to boardroom, and that reflects the diversity of the communities involved.
