Drink driving significantly increases the risk of road accidents, leading to higher rates of injuries, fatalities and long-term economic and social impacts on communities. This project aims to provide recommendations for improving road safety and reducing traffic casualties by applying quantile methods to analyse the determinants of casualties arising from road traffic accidents, including an assessment of factors such as gender, age and alcohol consumption, focusing on optimal use of enforcement of drink-driving laws.

The Project

This project offers a valuable opportunity to collaborate with leading risk modelling and analysis researchers at University of Barcelona, focusing on the application of quantile methods for transportation risk analysis, specifically enhancing drink driving law enforcement.

Through this partnership, the project seeks to deepen understanding of optimal enforcement actions on both national and regional scales, assessing policy impacts on alternative transportation modes, the role of gender, age and alcohol consumption in explaining traffic accidents, and the feasibility of initiatives that improve road safety. By identifying the best allocation of police resources, the project aims to minimise drink driving casualties.

International Partnerships

This international collaboration not only advances research but also supports the creation of evidence-based strategies for safer roads through applied, impactful risk modelling.

It aims to establish a lasting partnership between the University of Huddersfield and the University of Barcelona, developing a strong, international and multidisciplinary research community dedicated to exploring the complexities, challenges and broader implications of econometric and risk analysis in transportation economics.

One joint output has already been submitted to a high-quality ABS 3* journal. This project will generate further high-quality joint research outputs (targeting 3* journal submission), foster engagement with postgraduate and postdoctoral communities and explore future collaborative research and funding opportunities.

Professor Abhijit Sharma visited the University of Barcelona in 2024 and Professor Miguel Angel Santolino Prieto will visit Huddersfield in 2025.

This collaboration with the University of Barcelona allows us to apply advanced risk modelling and data analysis to improve road safety through targeted enforcement of drink driving laws, and focus on the role of gender, age and alcohol consumption. The aim is to reduce casualties and develop a robust, multidisciplinary research community addressing critical transportation safety challenges.
